On July 28th Judge Philpot states that his wife is “African-American” despite her looks, basing this claim on her time spent preaching to “pygmies in the Congo.” While such expressed affinity with black people may be heart-warming to some, it is wrong to equate the experience of those Americans whose ancestors were caged, raped and worked to death (and who subsequently endured generations of cruelty and injustice) with the experience of Americans indulging their savior complex amongst the poor, benighted denizens of the dark continent. Especially when one’s ancestors may have been the oppressors.
